New Year's Eve in Bangkok 2026: countdowns, fireworks and getting home

New Year's Eve 2026 in Bangkok: what CentralWorld and ICONSIAM have confirmed, the river fireworks, chanting at a temple, and the trains home after midnight.

Bangkok sees in the new year in two big places. CentralWorld turns the Ratchaprasong junction into a street concert with fireworks fired off the rooftops around it, and ICONSIAM sets off its show along the Chao Phraya River. Both are free, and both have confirmed for New Year's Eve 2026, which they call Countdown 2027. If you'd rather skip the crush, do what millions of Thais do and chant into the new year at a temple. Last year every train line ran until 2am, and that's how you get home.

We checked everything here on 29 October 2026. Line-ups, show times and the late trains usually come out in December, so where this year's details aren't out yet, we give last year's and say so. We'll update this page in mid-December.

One thing that is set: Thursday 31 December 2026 and Friday 1 January 2027 are both public holidays, so Thais get a four-day weekend.

The big free countdowns

CentralWorld: the street party

This year: Central Pattana announced CentralWorld Bangkok Countdown 2027 in October, for 31 December, with fireworks and a drone show. The artists will be named later (thaich.net).

Last year: it was free. Gates opened at 5pm and Thai pop acts played from 6pm, with the biggest names after 10pm: PP Krit, Billkin, Freen and Becky, then Palmy to see in the new year (Nation Thailand). To get into the stage zone you registered ahead in the mall group's Central X app, which gave you a free coupon to show at the gate. More than 350,000 people filled the junction, by the organiser's count, for fireworks launched from the buildings all around it and drones timed to the giant screens.

The crowd is the point here. It's loud and packed, and you'll be on your feet for hours. Take BTS Chit Lom or Siam and follow the skywalk. Don't come by car: last year Ratchadamri Road north of the junction closed from noon, and Rama I, Phloen Chit, Ratchaprarop, Phetchaburi and the rest of Ratchadamri closed from 4pm until 2am (Nation Thailand). ICONSIAM: fireworks on the river

This year: ICONSIAM announced Amazing Thailand Countdown 2027 in mid-October: five nights, 27 to 31 December. No line-up yet.

Last year: concerts ran every night at River Park, the open space on the riverfront, from about 5 or 6pm, free to walk in while there was room. Mark Tuan headlined the 31st. At midnight came a 20-minute show of fireworks, drones and pyrotechnics along 1,400 metres of the river, dedicated to the late Queen Mother (the Thaiger).

Take the Gold Line one stop from BTS Krung Thon Buri to Charoen Nakhon, which opens straight into the mall, or the boat across from Sathorn pier under BTS Saphan Taksin. Both get packed. The show is big enough to watch from anywhere within about 5 km on either bank, so the piers and bridges up and down the river fill with people who never go in, Sathorn pier and Taksin Bridge among them (Thansettakij). Map

Asiatique: the riverside market

Nothing's announced for 2026 yet. Last year Asiatique held a concert on the 31st, with Bodyslam closing the night, and fireworks at midnight. Its free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier ran until 2am that night (Brand Buffet). It's smaller than ICONSIAM and you can ride the Ferris wheel while you wait. Map

One Bangkok

Nothing announced yet. Last year the outside area of One Bangkok Park was free for everyone, while the zones near the stage went to members who redeemed app points or showed a receipt from the mall. Thai acts played from 5:20pm, NCT's Taeyong and Yuta came on at 11pm, and the countdown at 11:55pm had drones and fireworks (MGR Online). MRT Lumphini is the station. Map

Sukhumvit, Siam and the rest

None of these has announced for 2026. Last year EM District fired fireworks from rooftops along Sukhumvit, centred on Asok, the Phrom Phong junction, Benchasiri Park and Thong Lo (TAT). Siam Square, Siam Paragon and EmQuartier each ran a stage (cha-pop). ChangChui, the creative park in Thonburi, held a free festival on the 30th and 31st, and NEON Countdown filled Rajamangala Stadium for two nights at 4,300 baht (Time Out Bangkok). Khao San Road fills up on the night too. It's a street of bars, though, without a big organised show.

Rooftops and the river, by budget

The fireworks cost nothing. A seat with a view of them does, and on this night most of those seats are sold before you land.

  • Free: the riverbanks and bridges facing ICONSIAM. Bring water and expect to stand.
  • About 2,500 to 5,500 baht: a standing ticket at a rooftop countdown party, at last year's prices, usually with a drink or two included. The popular ones sell out, so book rather than turning up. You'll need to be 20 and carry your passport.
  • About 2,500 to 12,900 baht a head: a countdown dinner cruise. This year's boats were already on sale in mid-October, and the open top decks are the first to sell out. Most board between 9 and 10:30pm at River City, Terminal 21 Rama 3 or the Riverside Bangkok Hotel, serve a buffet with free-flow drinks, and come back after midnight.
  • The top end: Sky Bar at lebua has already published its 2026 prices. Package 1 is 29,800 baht plus service and tax, about 35,000 net, with two glasses of Bollinger, and Distil's starts at 13,800 baht plus service and tax (lebua).

Most other rooftops publish their New Year's Eve prices in November and December. For which bars face the river, plus dress codes and the walk from the station, see Bangkok rooftop bars by budget.

Chanting into the new year

Plenty of Thais never go near a stage. They go to a temple and chant through midnight, a custom called suat mon kham pi (สวดมนต์ข้ามปี), "chanting across the year". The Department of Religious Affairs runs it in every province, and for the start of 2026 it counted 12.6 million people taking part, 6.7 million of them at a temple and the rest online. In Bangkok the main ceremonies were at Wat Saket, Wat Arun and Wat Pho (Pattaya Mail).

Last year's times, on 31 December 2025 (Sanook):

  • Wat Pho: from 4:30pm, with a chanting book and a calendar handed out.
  • Wat Suthat: 7pm to midnight in the main hall.
  • Wat Benchamabophit, the Marble Temple: from 7pm, with a gong and bell rung in the new year, then alms for the monks at 6am on 1 January.
  • Wat Arun: from 8pm, then alms for 136 monks around the prang at 7:30am on New Year's Day.
  • Wat Saket, the Golden Mount: every evening from 30 December to 4 January, from 6pm.

Temples post this year's programmes in December. Last year's lists appeared between 17 and 30 December, so check the temple's own Facebook page before you go. The chanting is shown live on Thai TV too.

You'll sit on the floor with your shoes off for a couple of hours, reading the Pali chants from the book along with the monks. Nobody minds if you just sit and listen. Cover your shoulders and knees; lots of people come in white. It's free, and there's usually a box for donations. Our Thai etiquette post has the rest of the temple manners.

It's the calmest way to see in a new year in Bangkok, and it's easier next to someone who's done it every year. They'll find the page the monks are on, nudge you when it's time to bow, and tell you what the midnight blessing means. A Thai friend from Bangkok can come along to the temple with you.

Getting there and getting home

When to arrive

The sun sets at about 6pm. If you want to be near a stage, get there by early evening: last year CentralWorld's gates opened at 5pm, and the river concerts started at about the same time. If it's only the fireworks you're after, you can come later and watch from further back, because both shows go up high.

Trains on the night

Last year every line ran late (Nation Thailand):

  • BTS Sukhumvit and Silom lines: last trains at 2am from the ends of the lines, and at 2:45am from Siam in every direction.
  • Gold Line: the last train from the ICONSIAM station left at 2:25am.
  • MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink lines, the Airport Rail Link and the Red Line: until 2am.
  • Buses on the routes past the countdowns and the chanting temples ran until 2am, and the electric riverboats between Asiatique, Sathorn, ICONSIAM and River City until about 1am.

The 2026 hours weren't out on 29 October. Last year's were announced from 23 December (thaiest).

The stations the rail regulator expected to be busiest last year were BTS Siam, Chit Lom, Phrom Phong, Saphan Taksin and Krung Thon Buri, the Gold Line's Charoen Nakhon, and MRT Lumphini (MGR Online). So walk to a quieter one. From CentralWorld, BTS Ratchadamri on the Silom line is about 12 minutes south down Ratchadamri Road, which is closed to cars anyway, and Phloen Chit is about 15 minutes east. A crowd this size empties like a stadium after a concert, and our IMPACT Arena post has more on beating the queue home.

Grab, taxis and closed roads

A driver can't reach Ratchaprasong until the roads reopen, at 2am on most of them, and Grab and Bolt fares climb when thousands of people book at the same moment. Walk out of the closed area first, then book. The app shows the price before you accept, so you'll know what the surge is. Last year three expressways were also toll-free that night, which helps on a long ride out.

Drinks and ID

Thailand's drinking age is 20, and rooftops and bars check, so carry your passport. Since May 2026, shops can sell alcohol from 11am to midnight, so a 7-Eleven stops selling beer at midnight (Time Out). Hotels and licensed venues get more leeway. For food and somewhere to sit after the fireworks, Bangkok at night has what stays open late.

New Year's Day: what's open on 1 January

  • Banks and government offices close for the holiday. Malls, restaurants and the trains run as normal.
  • Temples are busiest in the morning, when Thais give alms to monks. Last year Wat Arun's alms round was at 7:30am and Wat Benchamabophit's at 6am.
  • The Grand Palace: on 1 January 2026, tickets for the full palace visit weren't sold, but the Temple of the Emerald Buddha opened from 8am to 5pm for people coming to pay respects (Nation Thailand). Last year's arrangements were announced on 29 December, so expect 2027's late too.
  • Chatuchak is a weekend market, so it's on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January.
  • Leaving town: many Bangkok people go home to their provinces for the long weekend, so book any bus, train or flight early.

Does the royal cremation change anything?

The royal cremation of Queen Sirikit runs from 15 to 19 December 2026 at Sanam Luang, beside the Grand Palace (Nation Thailand). By 29 October nothing had been announced that would change the New Year events, and both big countdowns announced their dates after the cremation dates were set. Last year, two months after her death, the countdowns went ahead and ICONSIAM's fireworks were dedicated to her. If your trip starts earlier in the month, Bangkok in December has what to expect that week.

Want company for the countdown?

A crowd of 350,000 at one junction is a lot to take on alone. Pick a friend in Bangkok, send the day, the time and where to meet, and they come along to your plan, whether that's the street party, a riverbank or a temple. They read the Thai signs on the closed roads, and at 1am they're the one on the phone telling the Grab driver exactly where you're standing. You book them by the hour, and it's always platonic: no sex, no kissing, no harassment. For a rooftop party or a cruise with drinks, your friend will be 20 or over. Their time is the booking. Food and drinks are paid on the night, and for a cruise or a rooftop ticket you buy theirs too. New accounts are checked first, usually within 15 minutes, so sign up before you fly. How booking works.

Questions people ask

Where is the best place to watch the New Year fireworks in Bangkok?

ICONSIAM for fireworks over the river: last year's show ran for 20 minutes along 1,400 metres of the Chao Phraya. CentralWorld for the street party, with fireworks from the rooftops around Ratchaprasong. Both are free and both have confirmed for 31 December 2026. For the river show without the crush, watch from the opposite bank or book a countdown cruise.

Is the CentralWorld countdown free?

Yes. Last year it was free to get in once you'd registered in the mall group's Central X app, which gave you a coupon to show at the gate from 5pm. The 2026 details are due in December.

Do the BTS and MRT run late on New Year's Eve?

Last year every BTS, MRT and Airport Rail Link line ran until 2am, and the last BTS from Siam left at 2:45am. The 2026 hours hadn't been announced by 29 October. Last year's were announced from 23 December.

Is New Year's Eve a public holiday in Thailand?

Yes. In 2026 both Thursday 31 December and Friday 1 January are public holidays. Banks and government offices close, while malls, restaurants and trains stay open.

What do Thai people do on New Year's Eve?

Many go to the free countdowns at the malls. Millions of others chant at a temple through midnight: 12.6 million people took part at the start of 2026, in person or online. On the morning of 1 January, families give alms to monks at temples.

How do you get home after the countdown in Bangkok?

By train, if the 2am late running happens again. Walk to a quieter station first, like BTS Ratchadamri from CentralWorld. For a Grab, walk out of the closed roads before you book, and check the fare on the app before you accept.
