Best pad thai in Bangkok: 8 shops worth the trip, area by area
The best pad thai in Bangkok, checked in October 2026: prices, queues, closed days and stations for 8 shops, and whether Jay Fai is worth the wait.

On this page10
The best pad thai in Bangkok is in the old town, in three shops a short walk apart. Go to Thipsamai for the classic, wrapped in a thin sheet of egg with prawns and shrimp oil, and go at lunchtime on a weekday when the line is short. Go round the corner to Mae Thum for the crispy-noodle version at about 100 baht. Then walk up Dinso Road to Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu for pad thai under char-grilled pork. It's the only pad thai shop in Bangkok with a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide.
Jay Fai is a few doors from Thipsamai, and yes, it still has its Michelin star. But you don't go there for pad thai. More on that below.
Every shop here was open when we checked on 28 October 2026. Prices come from current menus and recent bills. Hours change, so tap the map link before you go.

Where's the best pad thai in the old town?
Pad thai's home is the old town. Maha Chai Road runs south from Mahakan Fort to Pratu Phi, the old Ghost Gate junction, and Thipsamai, Jay Fai and Mae Thum are all within five minutes of it. Fai Ta Lu is 12 minutes north, on Dinso Road. No train stops at the door. The easy way in is the Saen Saep canal boat to its last stop, Phanfa Leelard pier, right by the fort. Or take the MRT to Sam Yot and walk 12 minutes.
Thipsamai
Thipsamai (ทิพย์สมัย ผัดไทยประตูผี) has been frying pad thai at Pratu Phi since 1966, and it's the name everyone knows. Order the "superb": thin sen chan noodles fried in shrimp oil with fresh prawns, then folded inside a paper-thin omelette. It costs about 120 to 150 baht, and a plain plate with egg is 90. The fresh orange juice by the door runs 100 to 300 baht a bottle, which is a lot for juice.
Is it the best? Visitors give it 4.2 stars across more than 12,000 reviews. Thai reviewers score it lower, and some say it's become a visitors' shop with visitors' prices. We'd still go once. The egg-wrapped plate is the original, and the cooks on the pavement woks are half the show.

The queue works on numbers: you take one and wait outside, and it moves fast. Evenings are busiest, and recent visitors were still queuing at 9pm. Come at lunch on a weekday and you'll wait minutes. It's open 9am to midnight and closed on Tuesdays. Phanfa Leelard pier is 7 minutes away on foot, MRT Sam Yot 12. Map
Mae Thum Padthai Kheng
Five minutes west, beside Bangkok City Hall, Mae Thum (แม่ทุมผัดไทยเข่ง) is the one to walk to next. It opened during the pandemic, started by a cook who'd made pad thai in a Thai kitchen in the US, and it's named after his mother. The menu is six kinds of pad thai, served in a small bamboo basket (kheng) lined with banana leaf. Get one with fresh prawns. Then get the crispy one: deep-fried egg noodles tossed in the pad thai sauce, with lime to squeeze over. The MICHELIN Guide lists it without an award, and Thai food shows have covered it since 2021.
Plates cost about 90 to 120 baht, and it's cash only. The room is calm and the food comes fast. Open 10am to 8pm, closed on Sundays, 12 minutes from MRT Sam Yot. Map
Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu
Fai ta lu (ผัดไทยไฟทะลุ) means "fire through", and you'll see why when the wok goes up. It's a one-room shop on Dinso Road near Democracy Monument, lit in neon, and it holds the only pad thai Bib Gourmand in Bangkok. Order the pad thai under char-grilled pork loin, the dish Michelin names, or the one with prawns stir-fried in their shells. Expect 170 to 260 baht a plate.
The downside: some recent visitors found it dear for what it is, and slow when it's busy. Come for the pork, not a street-stall price. It opens at 10am every day. Listings put the closing time anywhere from 8pm to midnight, so go before 8. It's 11 minutes from Phanfa Leelard pier and 12 from Thipsamai. Map
If it's a crab omelette you're after, Krua Apsorn is on the same road, open 10:30am to 8:30pm, and its version costs about 139 baht. Map
Three plates in one afternoon. Thipsamai at 1pm, Mae Thum five minutes later, then Fai Ta Lu before it gets late. Three plates is a lot for one person. With two of you it's a proper afternoon, and a Bangkok friend can ask each cook in Thai for less sugar or more chilli.
Is Jay Fai worth it?
Jay Fai (ร้านเจ๊ไฝ) sits a few doors from Thipsamai at 327 Maha Chai Road, and it still holds one MICHELIN star in the 2026 guide. But it isn't a pad thai shop. Jay Fai cooks in ski goggles over a charcoal fire, and people queue for her crab omelette, a thick roll of crab meat in crisp egg. The drunken noodles and the prawns stir-fried in yellow curry are the other orders. If pad thai is the plan, go to Thipsamai.

What it costs. The crab omelette is 1,500 baht on the menu. In August 2025 a diner was charged 4,000 baht for a "special" one that wasn't on it, and the Department of Internal Trade fined the shop 2,000 baht and told it to show its prices. So ask the price before she cooks. Recent diners spent 600 to 2,000 baht a head. Bring cash.
The queue. It's shorter than the legend of three to five hours. This year visitors have walked in without waiting on weekday afternoons, and one who came at 2:30pm on a Saturday waited 35 minutes for a table and another 30 for the food. Or try to book: Jay Fai's MICHELIN page has a booking form run by Chope. When we looked, it had no tables left for the same day.
When. Wednesday to Saturday, about 9am to 7:30pm. It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The booking form says Sundays too, while Google and Michelin say Sunday is closed, so check before a Sunday trip. Map

Our call: go if you want the crab omelette and the show, and 1,500 baht for one dish doesn't sting. For pad thai, no. Thipsamai's 150-baht plate is 25 metres down the road.
Where to eat pad thai near Wat Pho
Pad Thai Kratong Thong by Ama
If your day is Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, this is lunch. Ama (ผัดไทยกระทงทอง by ama) is a small shop on Maharat Road by Tha Tien pier, and its trick is the kratong thong: a crisp golden cup of batter that the prawn pad thai is served in. A plate is about 110 baht and drinks are 20. Lunch gets busy, so expect a short wait. It's open every day from 10am to 5:30pm, so it's a daytime stop. Tha Tien pier is 2 minutes away, MRT Sanam Chai 8. Map
What about Chinatown and Charoen Krung?
We didn't find a pad thai shop in Yaowarat that Thai food writers rate. Eat kuay jap and grilled prawns there instead (our Yaowarat street food plan has the stalls). For pad thai, ride one stop from MRT Wat Mangkon to Sam Yot and walk 12 minutes to Thipsamai. Further down Charoen Krung, by the river, is the crab one.
Baan Phadthai
Baan Phadthai (บ้านผัดไทย) is the sit-down version, in a restored blue shophouse at the mouth of Charoen Krung Soi 44. The pad thai comes on a banana leaf with the sides laid out next to it. The menu runs from grilled pork at 240 baht to grilled river prawns at 290 and crab at 320. It's the dearest plate here, and the complaints are about the price, small crab portions and the odd sticky batch of noodles. It was a Bib Gourmand in 2019 and isn't in the current guide. Go if you're staying by the river and want air-con and a proper table. It opens daily at 11am and closes at 9 or 10pm (listings differ), 5 minutes from BTS Saphan Taksin. Map
Where's the best pad thai on Sukhumvit?
Sukhumvit has lost a lot of its famous pad thai. Padthai Ekkamai on Soi 63, still on older lists, is now marked permanently closed. These two are a short walk from the BTS.
Thep PadThai
A new pad thai-only shop just off Sukhumvit 28, from one of the founders of Phed Mark, the kaprao place. Every plate comes with a Thai fried egg on top, runny in the middle and crisp at the edges, and you pick your spice from "not spicy" to "god level". Medium is plenty. The best seller is pad thai with crispy pork lard at 169 baht. Plain is 139 and fresh prawns 269. It's a quiet room with long wooden tables, and there's no queue. Open daily 10am to 8pm, 7 minutes from BTS Phrom Phong. Map
Hoi Tod Chaw Lay, Thong Lo
Three minutes from BTS Thong Lo, this shop is named for its hoi tod, the crisp oyster omelette, and it started in Phra Pradaeng, just south of Bangkok, in 1972. Order both: the omelette, thin and crunchy, and a pad thai with prawns, which visitors keep calling one of the best they've had. Pad thai costs about 120 to 170 baht. It opens at 8am daily, and listings give 8:30pm or 10pm for the close. Map
Worth the trip out: Din Daeng
Baan Yai Phad Thai
Around Soi Inthamara 47 they call Baan Yai (บ้านใหญ่ผัดไทยเตาถ่าน) "silent pad thai". Almost every cook and server here is hearing impaired, and the woks run on charcoal. It won a Bib Gourmand in 2020 and Thai diners still cross town for it. Order sen lek with fresh prawns (90 baht) or with crispy pork crackling (80 to 100). It comes spicy, so ask for less if you need to.
It's open every day from 8:30am to 6pm. A couple of recent reviews say later arrivals got served first at busy times, so go before the lunch rush. It's 17 minutes on foot from MRT Sutthisan, or a short Grab. Map
How to eat pad thai like a Thai
Pad thai comes to the table unfinished. You season it yourself.

- Lime first. Squeeze it over the noodles before you taste.
- Then the caddy. Most tables have four jars: sugar, chilli flakes (prik pon), fish sauce, and sliced chillies in vinegar. Thais add a pinch of sugar and a pinch of chilli, then taste. The flakes are strong.
- Peanuts. If they come on the side, stir them in.
- Eat the greens. Raw banana blossom (hua plee), Chinese chives (gui chai) and bean sprouts sit on the side. Bite some between mouthfuls. They're crunchy and a little bitter, and they cut the sweetness.
- Fork and spoon. Push the noodles onto the spoon with the fork. Chopsticks are for noodle soup.
Pad thai is a quick plate. For a long group dinner, make it a mookata night. For eating after dark, see our Bangkok night markets plan.
Do this plan with a Thai friend
Pad thai is fast, which makes three shops in one afternoon easy, and it works better with two people sharing every plate. Take this list, pick a friend in Bangkok, send the day and the time, and meet at Phanfa Leelard pier. They come along, order in Thai, split each plate with you and keep you company in the Thipsamai line. It's booked by the hour and always platonic. Their time is the booking; the food, the boat and the Grab home you pay on the day. Here's how booking works.
