To find a travel companion for Thailand, bring a friend, match with a traveller on an app like GAFFL or Backpackr, post in a Facebook group or on Reddit, meet people at a hostel or on a group day trip, or pay for company. Paid options run from carers for older travellers to a Thai friend by the hour.

Which one fits depends on what you're missing. Someone to split rooms with for three weeks is a different search from someone to share dinner with on a Tuesday in Bangkok.

A quick word on "paid". Search for a paid travel companion in Thailand and a few results are selling something other than company. This post covers platonic company only: someone's time, for plans you make, with nothing romantic about it. That's also all Rent Thai Friend does.

What are the ways to find a travel companion for Thailand?

There are six: a friend or relative, travel-buddy apps, Facebook groups and Reddit, hostels and group day trips, a professional paid travel companion, or a Thai friend by the hour. They differ most on cost, and on whether anyone has checked the other person.

Prices were checked in October 2026, and their sources are linked in the sections below.

Should you just bring a friend or relative?

If someone you know can come, that's the simplest answer. You already know how they travel, and who gets grumpy when lunch is late.

The catch is time. A friend's leave rarely lines up with yours, so you might have them for the first week and nobody for the rest. The other options are mostly for that second part.

Which travel buddy apps still work in 2026?

The quickest way to find a travel buddy online is an app that matches you with people heading to the same place on the same dates. We checked that these were still running in October 2026:

  • GAFFL: post a trip or browse other people's, then chat. Its App Store listing says it's free to use, with a paid subscription called GAFFL Unlimited for extras, and a free verification badge.
  • Backpackr: free. Enter a city and a date, and it shows the travellers going there at the same time.
  • Tourlina: free profiles, matched by dates and interests. Members can verify by email, phone or ID.
  • JoinMyTrip: works differently. A trip leader plans a trip, and you pay a 20% deposit to book a place in the group. It says it background-checks everyone on board.
  • Couchsurfing: best known for free stays, and it lists local events too. Chatting and joining events need a paid membership. Its optional verification badge now means a government ID check.

Older lists still name Travello. Its site now sells discounted trips and camper hire instead of matching travellers, so skip it.

A verified badge means someone's ID matched their face. It can't tell you whether they'll turn up or whether they're good company, so talk for a while before you book anything together.

Can you find a travel partner on Facebook or Reddit?

Yes, and it's free. Facebook has Thailand groups for backpackers, for women travelling alone and for digital nomads, where people post their dates. On Reddit, r/travelpartners exists for exactly this, and r/ThailandTourism is where people ask about Thailand in particular.

Write a specific post. "Bangkok 3 to 7 March, keen on street food and a Muay Thai fight, early riser" gets better replies than "anyone want to travel?".

Nobody has checked anyone, though, and plans change when someone else's trip does. Use the groups to find people, then check them yourself with the list further down. To meet Thai people instead, see our post on meeting locals in Thailand.

Can you meet a travel companion at a hostel or on a group day trip?

It's the easiest way to end up with company on a solo trip, because it takes no planning. A social hostel puts you in a common room with people on your route, and a group day trip puts you in a van with them all day.

  • Use the hostel chat. The Hostelworld app has chats for people staying at the same hostel, and city chats linked to your booking, so you can say hello before you arrive.
  • Book something that lasts a few hours. A cooking class or a hike gives you time to talk. Elephant Nature Park outside Chiang Mai charges 2,500 baht for a half-day visit.

These friendships usually last as long as your routes overlap. Our post on solo travel in Thailand lists more places where people meet.

Can you hire a travel companion?

Yes. Paid travel companions are a real line of work, mostly for older travellers and people with a disability. The companion travels with you, often door to door: airports, luggage, check-in, the flight and the ride to the hotel. Some agencies send nurses who also look after medication.

A few services that describe the work on their own sites:

  • Flying Companions offers companions worldwide for seniors, people with a disability, people with travel anxiety and anyone who'd rather not travel alone.
  • Flying Angels sends licensed medical professionals with travellers on commercial flights.
  • Jet Companion, a Canadian service, uses nurses who stay with an older traveller from home or the airport to their destination.

You pay for the companion's own travel as well as their time. A 2022 American Legion article lists their tickets, hotel room, meals, incidentals and the service fee. It puts a companion for one trip on a flight within the US at $2,500 to $5,000, depending on connections and length.

If a parent needs help getting to Thailand and around it, this is the service to look at. For a holiday where you'd just like company, it's more than you need.

How does a paid travel companion work on Rent Thai Friend?

Rent Thai Friend is the hourly version, for the parts of a trip where you'd like company. You pick a Thai friend in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket or Pattaya, book them for a few hours or a day, and they come along to a plan you've made, like a night market or a concert. They don't plan the day for you.

  1. Sign in with Google or LINE and send your details, including your real name, phone number and date of birth.
  2. Our team checks your account by hand, usually within a few hours.
  3. Buy credits, then send a friend a request with the date, start time, number of hours and a public place to meet. The credits are held, not spent.
  4. We confirm with the friend, and you meet.

Each friend sets an hourly rate in credits and a minimum number of hours, shown on their profile and on our pricing page. You also cover food, drinks, tickets and transport for both of you on the day. Every friend is 18 or over and checked against their ID, and friends under 20 don't join drinks or nights out. Everything is platonic, and you can message our team before you book. Every step is on how it works.

It's made for an evening in Bangkok or a day on a Phuket beach. Someone who flies in with you or travels the country with you for two weeks is a different service, and we don't offer it. Our page on how to book a travel buddy in Thailand sets it beside the free groups, and is rent a friend legit? answers whether paying for company is normal.

How do you stay safe meeting a travel companion from the internet?

Treat the first meeting as a trial run. Meet once for coffee before you agree to share a room, a car or the next leg of the trip.

  1. Video call first. Ten minutes on a call tells you more than a week of messages.
  2. Meet somewhere busy, in daylight, like a cafe by a BTS exit or a mall food court. Never somewhere private, and never in their car.
  3. Get there and home on your own. Book your own Grab: its Share my ride option sends your live location to someone you trust, and the app has an emergency button.
  4. Tell someone who you're meeting, where, and until when.
  5. Never pay up front. No deposits by bank transfer, and no "help" with a fine or a visa. If you lose money to an online scam in Thailand, the government's AOC 1441 hotline can have a suspicious account suspended.
  6. Keep your passport in the room safe and carry a photo of it.
  7. Buy your own drinks and keep them with you.
  8. Save two numbers: the Tourist Police on 1155, who answer 24 hours a day in 8 languages, and 1669 for a medical emergency.

The same rules hold when you book a friend through us. First meet-ups happen somewhere public, either of you can end a meet-up if something feels off, and our team steps in. The rest is on our safety page.

Which option should you pick?

  • You need help in airports or with medication: a professional travel companion.
  • You want someone for the whole trip on a small budget: an app or a Facebook group, then a few days together before you commit to more.
  • You want people around in the evenings: a social hostel and its chat.
  • You want company on particular days, with someone who lives here and speaks Thai: a Thai friend by the hour.

Most trips end up mixing them. A friend for the first week, a hostel crowd in Chiang Mai, then someone for the concert nobody else wanted to see. For that last one, browse the friends in your city and send a request for the plan you already have.

Questions people ask

Who counts as a travel companion?

Anyone who travels with you for part or all of a trip. Travel insurers use the term more narrowly. Allianz defines one as a person travelling with you or travelling to accompany you on your trip, and a companion's serious illness can be a covered reason to cancel, depending on the plan.

How much does a paid travel companion cost?

A professional companion for an older traveller charges a fee plus their own flights, hotel and meals; one US estimate is $2,500 to $5,000 for a single domestic flight trip. On Rent Thai Friend you pay the friend's hourly rate in credits, plus your plan's costs on the day.

Can I hire a travel companion in Thailand?

Yes. Professional companions who travel with older or disabled clients work worldwide. For company on particular days in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket or Pattaya, Rent Thai Friend books a Thai friend by the hour, and it's strictly platonic.

Are travel buddy apps free?

Mostly. GAFFL, Backpackr and Tourlina are free to join, and some charge for extras. Couchsurfing needs a paid membership to chat, and a JoinMyTrip trip costs the price of the trip.
