Is rent a friend legit? How it works and what you'll pay
Is rent a friend legit? Yes, when it's platonic and run properly. Where it started, how to spot a dodgy service, how booking works and what it costs.

Is rent a friend legit? Yes. Paying someone for their time and company is a real, legal kind of service, as long as it stays platonic. You book a person by the hour to come along to something you've planned, like dinner, a gym session or a concert. The good services write their rules down and check everyone's ID.
Is rent a friend legit, or is it a scam?
Rent a friend is legit when the service is platonic and runs in the open. Paying for someone's time is normal gig work. Think of hiring a photographer or a personal trainer for an afternoon.
Thailand treats it as work, too. The Department of Employment runs a freelance job board called Khon Tham Ngan, and it has its own category for people paid to go out as a friend. Listed earnings there are about 500 to 1,000 baht an hour. In the US, RentAFriend.com says in plain words that its service is strictly platonic.
So the idea is sound. The risk sits with whoever's running it. A stranger on social media with no written rules, no ID check and a request for a deposit by bank transfer is a gamble, whatever they call the service. That's why the better question is whether one particular rent-a-friend service is legit. The checklist further down answers that one.
Where does the idea of renting a friend come from?
Renting a friend started in Japan. The first known rental-family business there opened in 1991, according to Wikipedia's history of rental family services, and agencies went on to rent out stand-in relatives, coworkers and friends. In 2017, The Atlantic profiled Family Romance, a Japanese company with about 800 actors who could be booked as anyone from a best friend to a father. The same Wikipedia page dates the US site, RentAFriend.com, to 2009.
Thailand's turn came this year. In September 2026, Kyodo News reported that friend-for-hire work is taking off in Thailand, in a story carried by the South China Morning Post and Thailand-based ASEAN NOW. People in the story paid for company at the gym, on shopping trips, at indoor rock climbing and on holidays where someone had to take the photos. For many of them the reason was convenience. Their own friends were too busy to travel. Euromonitor figures in the same report put single-person households at 29.5% of Thai homes in 2025.
How do you tell a legit rent-a-friend service from a dodgy one?
A legit rent-a-friend service shows its rules and prices before you pay anything. If you have to ask for them in a private message, treat that as your answer. Run through this list first:
- The platonic rules are written down, including what gets someone removed.
- Members' IDs are checked by a person before anyone meets.
- First meet-ups happen somewhere public, like a cafe, a mall or a station exit.
- The hourly price is on the profile before you book.
- You pay inside the platform, never by transfer to a stranger.
- If something makes either person uncomfortable, they can end the meet-up, and the team steps in.
- Everyone is 18 or over, members and friends alike.
Here's what each check looks like in practice:
| What to check | A legit service | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|
| Rules | Platonic rules on a public page | There are no rules, or there are hints at extras |
| Identity | Your real name and phone number on file before you can book | Nobody asks who you are |
| First meet-up | A public place, like a cafe or a mall | Your hotel, their home or a car |
| Price | Hourly rate shown on the profile | The price only comes after you message |
| Payment | Paid inside the site, held until the booking is confirmed | A deposit by bank transfer up front |
| Feeling uncomfortable | Either person can end it, and the team steps in | Pressure to stay longer or pay more |
| Age | 18+ for everyone, and checked | No age rule at all |
One more check: read the terms. RentAFriend.com's terms of service say it doesn't run background checks on its members and that protecting yourself is your job. That doesn't make it a scam. It means the checks are yours to do.
How does renting a friend work on Rent Thai Friend?
On Rent Thai Friend, you book a hand-picked Thai friend by the hour to come along to your own plans in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket. The friend doesn't plan the day. You pick the plan, whether that's a mookata dinner or a hike, and they come with you.
- Sign in with Google, then add your full name and phone number. You need both before you can book.
- Browse friends and filter by language, activity and gender. Photos stay blurred until your account is approved.
- Open a profile and tap Book. Choose the date, start time, hours and meeting point, then send.
- Your credits are held. We confirm with the friend and email you.
- Meet somewhere public and get on with your plan.
Profiles show which languages each friend speaks and how well, so you can pick someone whose English or Chinese suits you. Friends choose which requests to accept. A day or two ahead is best, though same-day requests are fine to try. The how it works page has every step in detail.
How much does it cost to rent a friend?
Renting a friend costs the friend's hourly fee plus whatever your plan costs on the day. How that fee is charged depends on the service.
On RentAFriend.com, you first pay a membership to contact anyone. Its sign-up page listed about US$20 a month, or about US$100 for six months, when we checked in October 2026. The friend's own fee is on top, and the site says many friends start at about US$10 an hour, with the price open to negotiation.
In Thailand, freelancers on the Department of Employment's job board list about 500 to 1,000 baht an hour. One friend-for-hire in the Kyodo story charged 1,000 baht an hour, usually for two or three hours.
On Rent Thai Friend, each friend sets an hourly rate in credits on their profile, with a minimum number of hours. You buy credits in packs priced in Thai baht and pay by card through Stripe. A request holds the credits. They're used when the friend confirms, and they come back if the friend can't make it. If you cancel a request yourself, it isn't refunded. Current rates by city are on the pricing page.
The rate covers the friend's time. Food, drinks, tickets and transport for your plan are paid by you on the day, for both of you. If it's dinner, budget for two.
What's not allowed when you rent a friend?
Anything romantic or sexual is off limits on a legit rent-a-friend service. On Rent Thai Friend, dating, romance and adult services aren't allowed, and anyone who asks for them loses their account.
The other rules keep both people comfortable:
- No one under 18, as a member or as a friend.
- No moving the first meet-up somewhere private. It starts in a public place.
- No asking a friend for their personal contact details, or to meet outside Rent Thai Friend.
- No pressure. Friends choose which requests to accept, and if anything makes either of you uncomfortable, our team steps in.
Want to change something on the day? Ask your friend, and accept a no. If something feels wrong, leave, and tell us. The full rules for members and friends are on our safety page.
