Holiday girlfriend in Thailand: what it really means and what's legal
Strictly non-sexual company is the legal version. What a holiday girlfriend in Thailand usually means, the 1996 law, what goes wrong and how to book a friend.

On this page8
A holiday girlfriend in Thailand usually means a man paying a woman to spend his trip with him, with sex as part of the deal. That's prostitution, and it's illegal under Thailand's Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act of 1996. It's also behind a steady run of scam, theft and trafficking stories in the Thai news. If what you want is company, the legal version is a Thai friend you book day by day for plans you choose, and it's strictly non-sexual: no sex, no kissing, no harassment. That's how you rent a girlfriend in Thailand on Rent Thai Friend, and the end of this post shows how it works for a day or a whole week.
The phrases people search for don't all mean the same thing:
| The phrase | What people usually mean by it | Legal in Thailand? |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday girlfriend | A woman paid, in cash or an "allowance", to spend days or weeks of a visitor's trip with him, sex included | No. It's prostitution under the 1996 Act |
| Temporary girlfriend | The same arrangement, sold by the day or the week | No, for the same reason |
| Rent a girlfriend for a day | Either of the above, or a pretend date like the ones Japan's rental agencies sell | Paying for sex, no. Paying for time with nothing sexual in it, yes |
| Rental wife | The same idea over a longer stay | Paying for sex, no |
| Travel companion, or rent a friend | Someone paid for their time to come along to your plans, nothing sexual | Yes. It's ordinary paid work |
What does "holiday girlfriend" mean in Thailand?
The phrase belongs to the men who pay for it. In forum threads, Facebook groups and YouTube videos, a holiday girlfriend is a woman who spends some or all of a visitor's trip with him. She eats with him, travels with him and stays the night, and she's paid for it. He might meet her in a bar, on an app, or through an agency that calls her a "private travel companion" and charges an introduction fee.
The money gets gentler names: an allowance, help for her family, a shopping trip. It's still money for sex, with days out wrapped around it. Plenty of the videos sell it as romance. The money comes first, though, and the arrangement lasts as long as the money does.
In Japan the same words mean something else, a few hours of a pretend date, which we cover in can you rent a girlfriend in real life. The longer Thai arrangement has its own post, on rental wives in Thailand.
Is a holiday girlfriend legal in Thailand?
No. The Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act B.E. 2539 (1996) defines prostitution as sex, or any other sexual act, done "in return for earning or any other benefit". Those last four words matter. Paying her in shopping, rent or a plane ticket doesn't take it outside the definition.
Here's what the Act punishes, from the Council of State's English translation:
| Who | Section | Penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Anyone soliciting for prostitution openly in public | 5 | A fine of up to 1,000 baht |
| Anyone advertising prostitution, their own or someone else's | 7 | 6 months to 2 years, or 10,000 to 40,000 baht, or both |
| Anyone who has sex with a person over 15 and up to 18 in a prostitution establishment | 8 | 1 to 3 years and 20,000 to 60,000 baht |
| The same, with a child of 15 or under | 8 | 2 to 6 years and 40,000 to 120,000 baht |
| Anyone who procures a person for prostitution, even if that person agrees | 9 | 1 to 10 years and 20,000 to 200,000 baht |
| Owners and managers of a prostitution business | 11 | 3 to 15 years and 60,000 to 300,000 baht |
Most of those penalties land on the people who sell sex and on whoever arranges it. An agency that sets up a paid holiday girlfriend is procuring, in the Act's words. iLaw, a Thai legal-rights group, argued in 2021 that enforcing the Act hasn't reduced sex work the way it was meant to. It has pushed sex workers into hiding, and into relying on people with influence to keep them safe.
The age line
For the man paying, age is where the law hits hardest. Under Section 277 of the Criminal Code, sex with a child of 15 or under is a crime whether or not the child agreed: 5 to 20 years in prison and a fine of 100,000 to 400,000 baht.
Not knowing her age didn't stop an arrest. A 41-year-old Swiss man contacted a girl under 15 on Tinder for sex in 2023, then left Thailand before he could be prosecuted. He told police she was willing and that he didn't know how old she was. Immigration Police arrested him when he came back in February 2025, Khaosod English reported. Home countries can act too: US law lets prosecutors charge Americans who pay a child for sex abroad, with up to 30 years in prison, according to the Department of Justice.
Plans to change the law
In 2023 the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security drafted a bill to legalise sex work, with 18 as the minimum age to sell or buy, the Bangkok Post reported. On 28 May 2026 the Empower Foundation, a Thai sex workers' rights group, took its own bill to the House to repeal the 1996 Act (Khaosod English). In August it still needed the Prime Minister's endorsement before Parliament could debate it, Pattaya Mail reported. Until something passes, the 1996 Act is the law.
What do Thai people think of the holiday girlfriend thing?
We couldn't find a national poll on it. Here's what Thai news, Thai groups and officials have said, and they don't all agree.
Thai women are tired of the stereotype. In July 2024 a Singaporean influencer apologised for a clip that linked Thai women to the sex trade. It went viral in Thailand, and she said someone had filed a police report, The Straits Times reported. Two months later a Thai woman posted a tearful TikTok after a stranger on her trip to China called her and her friend prostitutes. Thai commenters lined up behind her (The Thaiger). The anger in both stories is aimed at one idea: that any Thai woman is for sale.
Sex workers' groups want rights. The Empower Foundation says the 1996 Act criminalises people who choose the work and leaves them open to exploitation and abuse. "This bill is not an endorsement of sex work," its representative said in May. In 2023 a sex workers' representative told the Bangkok Post that because the work is illegal, many pay bribes to police.
Officials worry about trafficking. After the 2023 Patong raid below, an inspector from the Department of Provincial Administration said trafficking could hurt Thailand's image and economy.
So sex work itself splits opinion in Thailand. The idea that Thai women come with the holiday gets a much rougher reception.
What goes wrong with a holiday girlfriend?
These are cases from the Thai press, with the numbers police and victims gave.
Money requests that keep growing
In December 2024 a South Korean man told Thai TV he'd lost more than 10 million baht to a woman he met in a Pattaya bar in 2020. First it was 100,000 baht for her father's funeral. Then, among other things, 250,000 for a car accident, 400,000 for her brother's gambling debts and 1.6 million for cancer treatment. Then her sister said she had died and asked for 2 million baht for the funeral. He found no sign of a death, and the family blocked him, The Thaiger reported. Every request came with an emergency attached.
Theft
On Valentine's night 2025 a Turkish tourist agreed a fee with a woman he met on Pattaya Beach and took her back to his hotel. While he showered, she left with about 25,000 baht in cash (Khaosod English). One night that August, Pattaya police took two more reports: an Australian who lost 7,000 baht the same way, and a Bangladeshi visitor beaten by three women and robbed of about 25,500 baht. Khaosod called it an ongoing problem and wrote that cases like these often go unsolved.
Exploitation and trafficking
The US State Department's 2025 Trafficking in Persons Report says children from Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Laos are increasingly victims of sex trafficking in brothels, massage parlours, bars, karaoke lounges, hotels and private homes. It also cites credible reports of corrupt officials protecting commercial sex venues from raids. Thai authorities arrested 130 people over child sexual exploitation and trafficking in 2024. A visitor can't tell from across a bar whether the woman he's paying is free to say no.
Under-age girls
In March 2023 officials raided a bar on Bangla Road in Patong, Phuket, on a tip from an anti-trafficking group, and found six girls under 18 being offered to foreign customers. The manager and an agent were charged with human trafficking, and five senior officers from the local police station were moved while their part was investigated (Khaosod English, The Thaiger). For a customer, that's the age line above.
What the police can do
Raid venues and charge whoever runs them with trafficking. Fine or jail sex workers under Sections 5 to 7. Arrest a foreign suspect years later, when he comes back, as with the Swiss man. And take a robbed tourist's report, though getting the money back is another matter.
The legal way to have company on your trip
If what you really want is someone to eat with, explore with and talk to, you can book that. On Rent Thai Friend, approved members book a Thai friend's time by the hour in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket or Pattaya. You pick the plan: a long dinner, a market, a beach day, live music. Your friend comes along, reads the menu and sorts out the taxi. They don't plan the day. It's your trip.
What's different from everything above:
- It's strictly non-sexual. No sex, no kissing, no harassment, and no romance or acting like a couple. The full list is under what a booking doesn't include.
- Every friend is 18 or over, and we've checked their ID. Drinks and nightlife are only with friends who are 20 or over.
- First meet-ups start somewhere public, like a cafe, a mall or a station exit.
- Friends choose which requests to accept. If a member asks for more, the friend can end the meet-up on the spot, and the member loses their account.
- Each friend sets an hourly rate in credits and a minimum number of hours. Credits come in packs and are only used once your friend confirms. Food, drinks and tickets are paid on the day. Rates are on the pricing page.
Friends are women and men, and each profile shows which. Nobody's for sale. You're booking someone's time for a plan you both know about, and they said yes to it. Every step is on how it works, and the rules for both sides are on our safety page.
A week of company, one day at a time
Search "rent a girlfriend for a week" and you're probably picturing one person for the whole trip. The legal way works differently. Each booking is one plan of up to 12 hours. For a longer trip, send a request for each day you'd like company, with the same friend if they're free. If the week moves between cities, book a friend in each one. A week might look like this, every plan your own:
| Day | City | Your plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bangkok | A cafe hop around Ari, then milk tea and the mall |
| 2 | Bangkok | Live music or karaoke, with a friend who's 20 or over if there are drinks |
| 3 | Chiang Mai | Doi Suthep at sunrise, a night market after dark |
| 4 | Chiang Mai | A day on your own |
| 5 | Phuket | A longtail boat and a beach day |
| 6 | Phuket | Lunch and a wander through Phuket Old Town |
Swap Phuket for Pattaya and it's Koh Larn and the night markets. You only book the days you want company, and each one ends when the plan does.

Book a Thai friend for your trip
Take the plans you already have, pick a friend in the city you're in and send the day and the time. You meet somewhere public, and they come along for dinner, a market or a day on the water. Their time is the booking. Food, drinks and tickets are paid on the day, by you, for both of you. That's how renting a girlfriend in Thailand works here, and you can browse the friends now.
Questions people ask
Is it legal to have a holiday girlfriend in Thailand?
Not when she's paid and sex is part of it. That's prostitution under the 1996 Act, which counts "any other benefit" as payment, so gifts or an allowance don't change it. Anyone who arranges it faces 1 to 10 years for procuring. Paying for someone's time with nothing sexual in it is legal.
Can I rent a girlfriend for a day in Thailand?
You can book a Thai friend for a day on Rent Thai Friend, strictly non-sexual. Each booking is one plan of up to 12 hours in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket or Pattaya, and the first meet-up is somewhere public.
Can I rent a girlfriend for a week in Thailand?
Not as one booking. Send a request for each day you'd like company, up to 12 hours each, with the same friend if they're free. It stays non-sexual every day.
What do Thai people think about holiday girlfriends?
There's no national poll. Thai news shows anger at the idea that Thai women are for sale, sex workers' groups pushing for labour rights, and officials worried about trafficking and the country's image.
What are the penalties for sex with a minor in Thailand?
Sex with a child of 15 or under is a crime whether or not the child agreed: 5 to 20 years in prison under Section 277 of the Criminal Code. Sex with anyone over 15 and up to 18 in a prostitution establishment carries 1 to 3 years under the 1996 Act. US law can also prosecute Americans at home for paying a child for sex abroad.
